Bobby

"Sometimes people don't want to hear the truth because they don't want their illusions destroyed"

--Friedrich Nietzche, (Earth)

* * *

Bobby stared down at the gScroll. Part of him couldn't believe he'd just hung up on his mother and another part of him was strangely relieved and happy he'd done it.

On one hand it was obviously rude and disrespectful and it wasn't something he would normally do. On top of that he'd already wanted to apologize for his comment about her not being his mother, and now he'd hung up on her after she’d apologized to him. And of course he'd probably be in a world of trouble now. His dad would be disappointed and come up with some painless consequence and then his mother would come back from whatever she was doing and bring the wrath-of-the-Space-Navy-Captain hammer down. She'd probably ground him for life or something like that.

But it kind of felt like it was worth it.

For his entire life his parents had been keeping secrets from him. Not secrets like Granddad was a criminal or Aunt Fanny fell in love with a monkey – nothing exciting like that. What his parents kept secret was where they went and what they did all day. Most kids knew what their parents did for a living. Bobby knew that Dr. Henry Blinx was a scientist and Captain Maria Blinx was a Space Pilot. Everyone knew that. What he didn't know was where the heck they were most of the time.

"Where are you going, Dad?" he used to ask while his dad was packing. He'd given up around age seven when he'd heard, "I can't tell you, Bobby, it's classified," for the thousandth time. His mother always seemed to leave when he was asleep and her whereabouts and activities were even more secretive and mysterious.

Bobby had long ago given up hope of ever being considered worthy of such weighty information. When he was a little kid it seemed normal and it didn't bother him much. Lately, though, it had really begun to piss him off.

What made it worse – much worse - was that everyone assumed he knew what his famous parents were up to. Teachers and parents of friends were constantly mentioning some star-studded conference his father was leading or some spectacular mission that his mother had been on. It was endlessly frustrating to Bobby that he was less likely to know what was going on with his parents than any average newsvid junkie.

So now it happened again. She wouldn't tell him what was going on so he hung up on her. Served her right.

Bobby looked up defiantly at his father and was a little surprised to find concern, not anger or disappointment, in his father's returned gaze.

"What's going on, Dad?" Bobby made no effort to keep the annoyance out of his voice.

"There's an asteroid heading toward Earth," Dr. Blinx said simply. "Your mother's going to push it off course. It'll be..." Henry stopped and shook his head.

"What?" Bobby was as stunned by the news as by this sudden candor from his father.
